Gene started playing accordion at the age of 7.  He joined his first band at 15, and had his first taste of the recording studio about 3 years later.  Played accordion for a professional Ukrainian dance troupe from 1973 to 1978.  Gene was recruited for the world renowned Ukrainian touring and recording band Melody Night  in 1980 as accordion/ keyboard player and vocalist. During that time he helped build and operate a 24-track recording studio known as Mastersound Productions with one of his band-mates.

He joined the New Dimension Orchestra in 1990 when Melody Night disbanded.  Concurrently, Gene also played with Five-Wheel Drive, the resurrection of  the Rapid Ridge band (country music), and Polkas & Co., a Chicago-style Polish Polka band.
